The W.S. Cox Plate honour roll is one unmatched by any other in Australian racing history.
The race was first held in 1922 and was won by imported stallion Violoncello – and it soon grew to become Australia’s premier weight-for-age event.
On October 22, Moonee Valley Racing Club will celebrate the centenary of the event with the 102nd running of the Ladbrokes Cox Plate.
In 1946, the club decided to split the race into two divisions as it received a large number of entries.
What other race can claim the four greats of the Australian turf on its roll call of winners – Phar Lap, Tulloch, Kingston Town and Winx?
Winx (four), Kingston Town (three) and Phar Lap (two) have accounted for nine of the 101 Cox Plates run.
When trying to work out the greatest Cox Plate winners, that is an excellent reference point.
