Alleged ISIS terrorist Neil Prakash charged, extradited to Victoria

A Melbourne man accused of being an Islamic State terrorist has been extradited to Victoria.

Neil Prakash, 31, was also charged with six offences including engaging in hostile activity in a foreign state, being a member of a terrorist organisation and entering or remaining in a declared area.

Footage released by Australian Federal Police (AFP) shows Prakash being escorted onto a late night flight from Darwin to Melbourne. He was then bundled into a vehicle.

Prakash had been deported from Turkey last week, where he had then remained in police custody.

He had been serving a period of detention for terrorism offences in a Turkish prison.

The former rapper is accused of joining and supporting Islamic State in 2014, as well as travelling to Syria and undertaking hostile acts in 2016, faces a life sentence if convicted.

AFP Acting Assistant Commissioner Sandra Booth today assured the community there was no imminent risk to public safety.

“The AFP Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) has worked tirelessly on this investigation since March 2015 to ensure this man could be brought before the courts,” she said.

“The AFP and our partners are committed to keeping Australians safe.”

Victoria Police Counter Terrorism Assistant Commissioner Michael Hermans said the extradition and charges came after a tireless and collaborative effort from Victoria Police and the AFP as part of the JCTT.

“The safety of the Victorian community is Victoria Police’s number one priority and we will continue to work with our partners to ensure this,” Assistant Commissioner Hermans said.
