Prince Harry Spare: Meghan Markle told she was ‘too thin to conceive’

Prince Harry has revealed a doctor advised his wife Meghan Markle to “gain five pounds” (2.2kg) in order to conceive.

In his bombshell autobiography, Spare, the Duke of Sussex opened up about his and the Suits actress’ desire to start a family after their wedding, which he described as the couple’s “main priority”.

“We didn’t want to wait,” he wrote. “We both wanted to start a family straightaway.

“We were working crazy hours, our jobs were demanding, the timing wasn’t ideal, but too bad.

“This had always been our main priority.”

Harry explained that the pair were concerned the stress of their lives might prevent them from falling pregnant.

“The toll was starting to be visible on Meg; she’d lost a great deal of weight in the last year, despite all the shepherd’s pie,” the royal wrote.

“’I’m eating more than ever’, she reported – yet her weight kept dropping.”

The Duke said his friends recommended an Ayurvedic doctor – a qualified medical practitioner following principles from ancient Indian medicine – who’d helped them conceive.

According to Harry, the physician confirmed the couple’s fears that Meghan’s weight loss “might be a barrier to conceiving”.

“As I understood it, Ayurvedic medicine sorted people into categories,” he explained.

“I don’t recall which category this doctor sorted Meg into, but she did confirm our suspicion that Meg’s weight loss might be a barrier to conceiving.

“Gain five pounds [2.2kg], the doctor promised, and you’ll get pregnant.”

Harry went on to say that the Duchess of Sussex did gain the weight the doctor recommended.

Recalling the moment the couple found out they were expecting, the Prince wrote: “We bought two home pregnancy tests, one for a back-up, and she took them both into the bathroom at Nott Cott.

“I was lying on our bed, and while waiting for her to come out … I fell asleep. When I woke, she was beside me. What’s happened? Is it … ? She said she hadn’t looked. She’d waited for me.

“The wands were on the nightstand. I only kept a few things there, among them the blue box with my mother’s hair.

“Right, I thought, good. Let’s see what Mummy can do with this situation. I reached for the wands, peered into their little windows. Blue. Bright, bright blue. Both of them.”

Harry explained that the blue result meant Meghan was pregnant.

“Oh wow. Well. Well then. We hugged, kissed. I put the wands back on the nightstand. I thought: Thank you, Mummy.”

The Sussexes welcomed their son, Archie, in May 2019.

In his new memoir, Harry also detailed that he and his wife did share the news of their first pregnancy at Princess Eugenie’s wedding in 2018.

The couple told his father King Charles in his Windsor office, who was delighted at the news.

Harry said his father had a big smile as he learned he was going to be a grandfather for the fourth time.

He then broke the news to his brother Prince William who told his wife Princess Kate.

Describing his sister in law’s reaction, Harry wrote: “She also gave a big smile and hearty congratulations. They both reacted exactly as I hoped — as I’d wished.”

While the Sussexes did not announce their news until days later, Princess Eugenie’s mother Sarah Ferguson was reportedly “furious” that the couple ‘upstaged’ the bride.

In their book Royals at War, authors Andy Tillett and Dylan Howard wrote: “This was a huge social gaffe, even if you were not a royal – stealing the limelight from Eugenie, who was furious, as was her mother, Sarah.”
