Melbourne Christmas traffic warning as West Gate Bridge undergoes works

Victorian holiday makers have been warned of upcoming disruptions to major transport links across the Christmas period.

Deputy Premier Jacinta Allan made the announcement on Tuesday morning, adding that the City Loop will also be shut down due to works for two weeks in January.

Between December 26 and January 4, just one lane on the West Gate Bridge headed away from the city will be open for traffic.

Major delays of more than 90 minutes are expected and motorists are urged to find a detours before leaving home.

Other impacted areas include the West Gate Freeway between the city and the West Gate Bridge, as well as the Domain Tunnel, Monash Freeway and throughout the CBD.

The roads undergoing works are heavily used by Melburnians during the summer, with the West Gate and Monash Freeways linking the city to popular Bellarine and Mornington Peninsula towns.

Train users have also been warned the City Loop will be shut down for two weeks from January 2 to January 15 while safety upgrades are made to stations on the circuit.

Flagstaff, Parliament and Melbourne Central stations will be closed for the fortnight, but Flinders Street Station and Southern Cross Station will remain open.

Smoke detectors and sprinklers will be improved along with other emergency systems during the period.

Ms Allan said the disruptions would eventually result in more seamless transport for Victorians across the state.

“It’s our biggest summer of Victoria’s Big Build, with more than 19,000 jobs on the ground pushing to get vital road and rail upgrades done in the coming months,” she said.

“We’re upgrading every regional passenger line and delivering major projects, including the Metro Tunnel – making it quicker and easier to get where you need to go, no matter where you live.”
