Mel B reveals ‘embarrassing’ Prince William encounter

Spice Girl Melanie Brown – aka Mel B – has opened up about an “embarrassing” faux-pas she suffered recently while accepting a prestigious award from Prince William.

The girl group star, known to millions as ‘Scary Spice’, was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in May last year for her work campaigning against domestic abuse.

The award was to be presented to her at Buckingham Palace by Prince William himself – and Mel B enlisted her old bandmate Victoria Beckham, now a successful fashion designer, to give her the perfect outfit.

There was only one problem: The outfit Beckham chose had a slit across the dress, right where the Prince was to pin her medal. Cue an awkward moment as William, faced with a Spice Girl’s cleavage, tried to work out exactly where he could pin the medal.

“It was quite embarrassing, actually, because I didn‘t realise the medal actually goes here on your chest,” Mel B revealed in an appearance on US talk show Live With Kelly and Ryan this week.

“And Victoria designed my dress, mine and my mom’s dress for the occasion. And she put a big slit right there. I was like, ’Oh, sorry.’”

“I think she knew,” Mel B joked of her bandmate. ”She did a number on me!”

Clearly, there were no real hard feelings, though: Mel posted a rare photo of her and Victoria together after the Buckingham Palace event, sharing a meal in celebration of her award.

“My spice sister vic, I can’t thank you enough for your enormous generosity. Not only did you dress me and my mum but you surprised me by actually being there to fit us…….it was just soooooooo special thanks to YOU and your fabulousness,” she wrote, paying tribute to their “25 years of friendship.”

And there was some promising news for Spice Girls fans from Mel B’s recent TV appearance, with the star insisting on UK chat show Loose Women this week that the group would be getting back together for something special soon.

“For sure we are getting back together. We‘re sisters at the end of the day and what we went through was quite an amazing, brilliant, journey so we’re together, we’re back together,“ she said.

“There‘s one that’s been a bit difficult, but she’s getting roped in,” she continued, without naming names.

But fellow Spice Girl Mel C told a different story in another interview this week, telling the Guardian that she “hates” being asked about the oft-rumoured notion the group could reunite for a performance at the iconic Glastonbury Festival.

“It’s the question I hate the most because the answer is as disappointing to me as it is to Spice Girls fans,” she said.

“We would love to do Glasto. It just doesn’t fit with the current plan with the girls. We want to get back on stage – everything is up in the air.”

The Spice Girls last reunited as a four-piece for a 2019 stadium tour, with Mel B announcing onstage on the last night of the tour that it would continue to Australia in early 2020. However, tour dates never materialised.
