Hyundai Australia have issued an urgent recall affecting nearly 8500 vehicles over a potentially fatal flaw with the vehicle’s ‘fail-safe’ driving mode.
If certain transmission faults are detected, the car could suddenly slow down before the car loses engine power.
Two separate recalls were issued through the Government’s Vehicle Recalls register affecting 2021 to 2022 models of the i30N (PD) and 2020 to 2022 models of the Santa Fe (TM), Kona N (OS), i30N Sedan (CN7) and Sonata N-Line (DN8).
The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communication and the Arts said the potentially fatal fault could lead to a crash if the vehicle is travelling at high speeds.
“Due to a programming issue, the ‘fail-safe’ driving mode may not respond as intended when certain transmission faults are detected,” the recall said.
“This could potentially result in injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”
Owners of the vehicles listed have been advised to contact their preferred authorised Hyundai dealer as soon as possible. Any work required will be carried out at no extra cost.
