WA: Man dies following Armadale outdoor mall incident

A man has been arrested and charged with causing the death of another man following an incident in a pedestrian mall.

The incident happened at about 5.35pm on Tuesday in Armadale’s Jull Street Mall in Perth’s southeastern suburbs.

WA Police said a 58-year-old man was injured in an incident at the mall and taken to Armadale Hospital.

He was then taken to Royal Perth Hospital, where he died from his injuries on Wednesday.

Homicide Squad detectives on Thursday arrested a 54-year-old Brookdale man, who is known to the victim.

He was refused bail ahead of an appearance in Armadale Magistrates Court on Friday, on a charge of unlawful assault causing death.

The Jull Street Mall was a key focus of the City of Armadale’s Activity Centre Plan in 2020, with community concerns over crime. Half of the 20 shops there at the time were permanently closed.

“One thing is clear, it is going to take all of us – business owners, police, council and the community, working together to resolve this problem,” said Mayor Ruther Butterfield in a March 2020 media release.

“We need everyone to play an active role in delivering this vision for the future of our community.”
