Yagoona shooting: Hilal Barbour killed by police in ‘frightening’ ordeal

A man who was shot by police after threatening officers with knives during a domestic violence incident has been identified.

At about 8.50am on Sunday, NSW Police attended an address in Yagoona after reports of a domestic violence related matter.

Upon arrival, a 29-year-old man, since identified as Hilal Barbour, threatened officers with two knives, police say.

Police then used a taser in an attempt to subdue Barbour, but he pursued them outside the house.

“It is without a doubt frightening,” NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith told reporters on Sunday..

“The individual tried to slash and stab the female officer. She lost her footing, she fell backwards. He continued the attack.”

Assistant Commissioner Smith said Barbour had been threatening his family with knives before police were called.

“Momentarily his focus was then drawn to the male officer, who then deployed the service firearm.”

He said the male officer deployed three rounds from his firearm.

The two officers performed CPR on Barbour until paramedics arrived on the scene, however he died at Liverpool Hospital shortly after.

Barbour’s family have claimed he had been suffering from a severe mental illness.

They also revealed he had been begging for assistance since before the tragic incident.

Residents of the neighbouring property told 9 News Barbour was “not well.”

“We’re just basically praying for him, we’re praying for the family,” a neighbour told 9 News.

“A critical incident team comprised of officers from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharge of a police firearm” NSW Police said in a statement on Sunday.

“That investigation will be subject to independent review.”
