Magnitude 6.5 earthquake shakes Ecuador, northern Peru



A magnitude 6.5 earthquake shook an island region of Ecuador and northern Peru on Saturday, causing inhabitants to rush out of buildings. President Guillermo Lasso said the strong quake has killed at least 12 people.
Rescue crews have been searching for survivors after some buildings collapsed and cars were crushed, according to reports.
Buildings were also reported damaged after the quake hit. Social media users reported damages to homes and buildings.
The quake had an epicenter 29 kilometers (18.02 miles) from the city of Balao in the province of Guayas.
Authorities said the earthquake did not appear likely to generate a tsunami.
State-run oil company Petroecuador said there were no reports of damage at any facilities and “that operations continue normally”.
