Rockhampton, QLD: Car stolen with baby on-board

Two people have been charged after a car was allegedly stolen with a four-month old baby in the back seat.

The woman, 23, was packing items into the boot of her grey Nissan Patrol at about 12.10pm on Wednesday in Yeppoon in central Queensland when a woman allegedly got into the driver’s seat.

CCTV footage captured the moment the car drove away with the baby in the back seat.

“I screamed ‘my baby, my baby’s in that car,” the mother told 7News.

“It was just horrific. My heart sank knowing not knowing if I was gonna get my baby back.”

The child was safely removed, and police allege the woman drove away again in the Nissan Patrol.

But before she was able to leave the car park she allegedly crashed into two people.

Queensland Ambulance paramedics attended the scene to assist at about 12.14pm at the shopping centre car park on Park St.

A 16-year-old male and a 39-year-old woman were treated for injuries to their legs and were taken to Yeppoon Hospital.

The baby was not physically injured.

Around 4pm, police located the grey Nissan Patrol and took the man and woman into custody.

On Thursday morning, police charged a 24-year-old Cobraball woman with dangerous driving and child abduction, while a 36-year-old Mount Morgan man was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

They allege when the woman, who was driving the stolen vehicle realised the child was inside, returned to the scene and demanded the mother take the child out of the car.

Both the 24-year-old woman and the 36-year-old man have been denied bail and will appear in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Thursday.
