Anthony Albanese has tried to show he can still have fun despite the serious job of being Prime Minister.
He appeared Charlie Pickering’s The Week program on the ABC, subjecting himself to the This Is Apparently Your Life segment with comedian Rhys Nicholson.
Nicholson started by making fun of his propensity to talk about growing up in government housing.
“It was a council house in Camperdown. My mum lived there her whole life. Did you know I was the son of a single mum?” a good natured Mr Albanese played along.
And when it came to prime ministers “having the charisma” sucked out of them, he said “it comes over a period of time”.
“But I’m doing this show,” he said, contrasting it with more serious interview with Sarah Fergus on 7.30, to prove his charisma.
Nicholson also tried to pin him on the rental crisis.
“You drank a beer at a concert after being egged on by a bunch of kids. If a bunch of kids yelled at you to fix the rental market, could you do that?” Nicholson said.
The PM said it wasn’t that simple.
“If it was as easy as skolling a beer, then I’d be in like Flynn,” he said.
Mr Albanese survived the short segment relatively unscathed and to the cheers and applause of the audience.
“Thank you very much. I’ll have to come back.”
