Video captures Bali priest and tourist in fist fight among traffic in Ubud

Video footage has shown the dramatic moment a Balinese priest and tourist appeared to get into a fist fight in the town of Ubud on the weekend.

In the clip circulating on social media, two men are seen standing in the street surrounded by traffic.

The man who appears to be a priest takes off his traditional headdress and is shown trying to grab the other man by his colourful shirt.

After a few more words between the two, the man in the colourful shirt is then seen pushing the priest.

The video shows another man then attempting to hold the priest back, but he manages to approach the man in the colourful shirt again and a fist fight ensues.

Ubud police chief I Made Uder told local media detikBali after the video went viral on social media over the weekend that officers were investigating. He added that witnesses said the fight was sparked by a road rage incident.

English-language local news site Coconuts Bali said it had viewed another video of the priest being questioned by police at his house.

The outlet reported that Jro Mangku Budi Utama, 51, claimed he was driving to religious duties on Sunday when the other man’s car allegedly hit the mirror of a car behind him in congested traffic on Ubud’s main road.

Mr Budi Utama claimed to police that the man then approached his car.

“I wanted to speak properly with him. He actually had a problem with the car behind me. I wanted to tell him this,” he said.

“But instead insulting words came out, like – I’m sorry [to quote him] – he said, ‘Sh*t you.’ For me, it was rude. I’m sorry, I’m a priest but I’m also human. I cannot accept this insult.”

According to Coconuts Bali, police allege the man grabbed a shard of glass before pushing the priest after he got out and confronted him.

What happened next was captured in the viral video.

Bali Police spokesman Stefanus Satake Bayu Setianto told the publication authorities were still working to identify the man, who they believed was Russian.
