Margot Robbie has given fans a behind-the-scenes look inside the whimsical Barbie Dreamhouse set to feature in the highly anticipated Barbie movie out next month.
The Aussie actress – who plays the title role in the upcoming film – dressed in character as she opened the pink doors with B-shaped knobs of the iconic play house for Architectural Digest’s YouTube page.
“Welcome to Barbie’s Dreamhouse,” the 32-year-old said as she welcomed in the cameras.
Robbie – wearing a cute pink-and-blue jacket with a matching puffy miniskirt – proceeded to walk around the beautifully designed pink-themed set brought to life by director Greta Gerwig and her talented crew.
Robbie showed fans the plastic-fantastic kitchen partially stocked with “real” tools, and her bedroom that comes equipped with a swirly slide down to the fake pool. The actress reveals that the pool does not actually have any water – the water is painted on – as water does not exist in Barbie’s world.
“There is no water in Barbie land. There’s no water or fire. There are no elements,” she reveals, adding that the fully functioning slide is her favourite design feature.
“We do a whole bit in Barbie’s day where she slides down the pool to go down and have her breakfast,” she said.
But the best things about Barbie’s world are the see-through houses for the characters, so they can all wave at each other to say good morning and good night.
And of course, Barbie’s wardrobe plays a massive part of the movie, with the famed doll getting her outfits picked out magically.
“She opens the doors. All she needs to do is look at it, gives a spin and then it’s on her body,” Robbie explained. “She walks off and her outfit for the next day is sitting in her wardrobe behind her.”
Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken, also featured in the Architectural Digest special, on which he recalls seeing the Dreamhouse for the first time.
“Walking into those environments, and feeling the artistry, and the love, and the playfulness. It just was so exciting,” he said.
With everything on set pretty much pink, there were reports that the world had a pink paint shortage at one stage because of the film. But director Greta Gerwig said finding the right shades of pink was a challenge she willingly accepted.
“Maintaining the ‘kid-news’ was paramount. I wanted the pinks to be very bright, and everything to be almost too much,” she said, adding that she didn’t want to “forget what made me love Barbie when I was a little girl”.
