Yet more rain and snow is expected in Australia in the next 24 hours, with parts of the country set to be blanketed as freezing weather persists.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, rain is forecast to continue to fall across SA and parts of east Australia, courtesy of a persistent cloud system that has lingered over Adelaide for several days.
The system is expected to sweep farther east on Friday, with extensive rain cloud coverage from Launceston in Tasmania, up through Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra, inland towards Wilcannia and as far north as Charleville in Queensland.
The expected rainfall totals are minor compared to the mammoth falls those in the southeast are now used to, but the widespread coverage of the rain should be impressive.
Images provided by the BOM show rainfall expected on Friday across almost the entirety of Tasmania, Victoria and NSW, as well as the majority of SA, parts of southern and northern Queensland, the central NT and in WA around Broome and The Bight.
Heavier rainfall totals of between 20 and 50mm are expected around Launceston, Bendigo and Moree, while lighter falls of just a few millimetres are forecast in a smattering of towns including Charleville, Byron Bay and Alice Springs.
In the Australian Alps, the rain is forecast to turn to snow at elevations of as low as about 1300m — well below ski resort level — in welcome news for skiing holiday-makers.
Snow is expected to fall on Friday outside Canberra, sweeping down into Victoria’s Falls Creek.
Chilly conditions are forecast to warm up in a few of the capital cities, with Brisbane leading the charge.
The sun is expected to shine again in Brisbane from Friday, making way for a sunny weekend. Mornings are still expected to be chilly with minimum temperatures of between 9 and 13C but should warm up to maximums of between 25 and 27C.
Sydney, too, is expected to warm up slightly with rain forecast to clear late on Friday. Maximum temperatures are expected to hover between 18 and 20C, with a few clouds in the sky most days. Wednesday is the exception, with an expected minimum temperature of 7C warming to just 16C.
Conditions will warm up ever so slightly in Canberra, with minimum temperatures rising to between 2 and 4C for the next few days. Morning frost is expected to return by Thursday, when the minimum temperature is forecast to plummet back down to zero.
Adelaide, meanwhile, will continue to shoulder the brunt of the past week’s rain, with showers forecast every day until late next week. Minimum temperatures are expected to hover between 9 and 11C, with maximum temperatures of up to 16C.
Hobart, too, will stay rainy with showers forecast every day until late next week. Minimum temperatures are expected to hover between 6 and 8C, while maximum temperatures should reach between 11 and 14C.
In Perth, showers are forecast though the weekend before clearing on Monday. Mornings are still expected to be crisp, with minimum temperatures of as low as 5C, warming up to the mid-to-high teens each day.
Melbourne will likely stay cold with showers expected on Thursday and Friday. The rest of the week’s forecast is a mixed bag of sunshine and rain, with chilly maximum temperatures of between 12 and 15C.
In Darwin, sunny or lightly cloudy conditions will prevail, with minimum temperatures of between 21 and 23C all week. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach a balmy 32C each day, right through to the end of next week.
