Avalon Beach: Police investigate bus stunt

A young man has been caught riding on top of a bus, sparking a police investigation.

A photo of the boy was taken on Sunday night and looks to show him on top of the bus as the vehicle made its way through the Bilgola Bends near Avalon Beach.

The long, winding road has been the site for a number of crashes.

The person who took the photo posted it on Facebook, saying there was a “small group of boys doing this”. while riding the 199 bus.

NSW Police confirmed to NCA NewsWire that they and Transport NSW are aware of the incident and are conducting inquiries.

The incident comes just weeks after nearly a dozen lives were claimed by a bus crash on NSW roads.

Ten wedding guests were killed on June 11 when the bus taking them to their accommodation rolled while driving through a roundabout in the Hunter Valley about 11.30pm.

A further 25 passengers were sent to hospital after the bus crashed onto its side and on top of a guardrail, with crash investigators still piecing together what went wrong.

The driver, Brett Andrew Button, has since been charged with ten counts of dangerous driving occasioning death.

Police will allege in court that Mr Button entered the roundabout too fast, causing the vehicle to fall on its side.

He appeared in Cessnock Magistrate’s Court on June 13 and was granted strict conditional bail.

Those who saw the photo were quick to draw comparisons between the two crashes.

“After knowing someone who passed in the Hunter bus crash this just makes me feel sick to my stomach,” one person said.
