Daniel Robert McJannett: Man faces court charged with murder of dad-of-two Matthew Berry

Crucial CCTV evidence will play a key role in the case of a groomsman charged with murdering a father-of-two in his home, a court has heard.

Daniel Robert McJannett was arrested just a week after Matthew Berry’s body was found in his Tamborine Mountain home.

Mr Berry’s ex-wife Edwina made the horror discovery at the Tolima Dr address in the Gold Coast hinterland.

On Wednesday police prosecutors asked for a lengthy adjournment to prepare a brief of evidence against Mr McJannett.

“Given the nature of the offence and the significant quantities of scientific evidence, coupled with the CCTV footage to be obtained, I would seek four months,” police prosecutor Sergeant Stephen Cochrane said.

Mr McJannett, 36, is facing a single charge of murder along with charges of stealing and possessing marijuana.

Police allege in court documents he killed Mr Berry, 37, in his house on June 28 and stole a CCTV storage device from the home on the same day.

It is further alleged the pair were known to each other.

The Courier Mail reports Mr McJannett was a groomsman at Mr Berry’s wedding two years ago.

Mr McJannett, a glazier by trade, was not brought before the court when his matter was mentioned at Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Sergeant Cochrane said a partial brief of evidence could be prepared by the arresting officer in four months’ time.

The court was told outstanding pathology statements were some nine months away.

Magistrate Gary Finger adjourned the matter to November 1.

No application for bail was made.

Following Mr McJannett’s arrest last week, Detective Inspector Chris Knight said police could not confirm any possible motives.

“The victim in this matter lost his life through an act of violence,” he told reporters last week.

“To say (the alleged murder scene) was confronting is to be quite honest an understatement.”
