The Brits are looking to muscle in on Toyota turf with a new four-wheel drive ute that will compete with the famed LandCruiser 70 Series.
Start-up brand Ineos has unveiled the Grenadier Quartermaster; a rugged, no-nonsense dual-cab ute headed Down Under.
It joins the Grenadier wagon in the new brand’s Australian line-up.
The newcomer is the brainchild of a British billionaire, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who wanted a stripped back, hardworking four-wheel drive for the modern day.
The Grenadier was developed as a spiritual successor to the previous Land Rover Defender.
Prices start at $110,000 (before on-road costs) for the standard version and jump to $123,000 for the Trailmaster and Fieldmaster Editions.
The Quartermaster is now available to order in Australia, with deliveries to commence at a later date.
Ineos uses two BMW sourced 3.0-litre six-cylinder engines; one petrol and one diesel.
The petrol makes 210kW and 450Nm and drinks a claimed 12.6L/100km. The diesel produces 183kW and 550Nm and uses 10.5L/100km. Both are paired to an eight-speed automatic and permanent four wheel drive.
The Grenadier Quartermaster is built on a robust ladder frame, which underpins the toughest 4WDs such as the Toyota LandCruiser.
High and low gears and a locking central differential are standard, but adventurous types can order optional locking front and rear differentials.
Standard 17-inch steel wheels are wrapped in all-terrain tyres, which jump to 18-inch alloy wheels in the Quartermaster Fieldmaster Edition.
Brembo brakes and tough five link suspension add further character to the Quartermaster.
It has 264mm of ground clearance and an 800mm wading depth. Ineos claims the Quartermaster’s 36.2 degree approach and 22.6 degree departure angles are better than any other 4WD ute on sale.
The Quartermaster has a payload of 832kg and its tray is wide enough to hold a Euro pallet.
Adding further practicality are four tie-down points in the tray and tailgate that can support more than 200kg.
