Margot Robbie stands to make her highest salary yet for her role in bringing Barbie to the big screen.
The Australian actress, 32, who starred in and produced the Greta Gerwig-directed blockbuster, reportedly made an upfront fee of $19 million to portray the Mattel doll.
But according to Variety, that figure will boost to around $77 million thanks to lucrative box office bonuses.
Barbie, which was made on a budget of approximately $220 million, hit the coveted $US1 billion mark at the global box office earlier this month, just two weeks after it hit cinemas.
It made Gerwig the first female director to reach the milestone. Gerwig also co-wrote the screenplay with partner Noah Baumbach.
Robbie, who hails from the Gold Coast in Queensland, was instrumental in bringing Barbie to life, with her production company LuckyChap Entertainment buying the rights from Mattel back in 2018.
She later pitched the film to Warner Bros. and managed to convince Gerwig to write and direct.
Speaking of her commitment to making Barbie happen, Robbie recently said she was “overselling” the project in early meetings with executives.
“I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director,” Robbie said in an interview with Colliderin July.
She added: “And then I gave a series of examples like, ‘dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg’ – pretty much naming anything that’s been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years.
“And I was like, ‘And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig.’ And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, OK?”
Robbie, who founded her production company in 2014 with husband Tom Acklerley, originally shot to worldwide recognition in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 blockbuster, The Wolf of Wall Street.
She’s since been nominated for two Academy Awards and has starred in a flurry of popular films including Suicide Squad, Bombshell, I, Tonya, Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood and Focus.
Barbie marks her highest-grossing release to date.
According to a recent report in The Hollywood Reporter, there are not yet any deals in place for a sequel.
