A special memorial will be held for the couple who died after eating a meal believed to contain deadly death cap mushrooms.
Don and Gail Patterson died after eating the meal cooked by their former daughter-in-law, Erin Patterson, at her home in Leongatha, southeast of Melbourne, on July 29.
Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson also died after eating the meal, while her husband Ian, the local pastor, remains in hospital.
Victoria Police continue to investigate the deaths, but have laid no charges.
The Patterson family released a statement on Tuesday announcing a memorial will be held in honour of the couple with members of the public invited to attend.
“The family of Don and Gail Patterson wishes to extend an invitation to the community for a public memorial service to celebrate and remember the lives of Don and Gail,” the South Gippsland Sentinel Times reports.
“Both were cherished members of the community, known for their humility and the positive impact they had on those around them.”
The couple have already been laid to rest in private funerals but given the outpouring of support from the national community, the family wanted to give the public a chance to mourn their loss.
The memorial will be held at Korumburra Recreation Centre on August 31.
“The Patterson family has expressed their deep gratitude for the outpouring of love, support, and understanding during this challenging time,” the statement reads.
“They have been touched by the many memories and stories shared by friends, acquaintances, and even strangers who were touched by Don and Gail‘s kindness and generosity.
“In keeping with Don and Gail‘s wishes and character, the family has chosen to commemorate their lives in a manner that reflects their values and the love they shared with their community.
“The upcoming public memorial will be an opportunity for all who knew Don and Gail to come together, share memories, and celebrate the lasting legacy they have left behind.”
It is not suggested Ms Patterson deliberately poisoned the dish, only that police are investigating the deaths.
