A plastic factory has gone up in flames in Sydney’s west, spewing smoke into the sky.
Firefighters are working to contain the blaze at a Woodpark Road factory that makes plastic piping in Smithfield that broke out just before 4am on Thursday.
The air quality in the area is poor as a result of thick smoke.
“Oh my goodness, a big night for Fire and Rescue NSW,” Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry told 2GB on Thursday morning.
“We’ve had more than 100 firefighters off 25 fire trucks containing this fire.”
About 30 workers self evacuated when the fire broke out, no injuries have been reported.
Firefighters were alerted to the threat of a potential chlorine gas leak but this was avoided after staff isolated the gas lines.
The blaze took hold quickly as a result of the plastic stored inside which is a highly flammable material.
“Plastic is a significant fire load and can burn readily and very hot,” Mr Dewberry said.
The fire was contained by about 6am but Woodpark Road will remain closed for a number of hours as firefighters continue to clear the scene.
“Thank goodness for the great operations of our firefighters, who I think have contained the fire to maybe a quarter of the factory that could have been involved,” Mr Dewberry said.
All persons are accounted for, according to Fire and Rescue NSW.
Firefighters have flagged concern for asbestos in the roof of the factory and have engaged the appropriate authorities to manage the clean up.
