Blackburn North: Child dies after being hit by car in church carpark


A child has died after being hit by a car in a church carpark.

Police were called to Blackburn North in Melbourne about 6.45pm on Saturday to reports the child had been struck.

Paramedics attempted to revive the child but they were pronounced dead at the scene.

A statement from Victoria Police said the driver of the vehicle stopped to assist and is speaking with police.

The circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Hours later, a man died in a single-car crash at Cowes.

Police believe the car, which was carrying five men at the time, lost control before crashing into a tree at the intersection of Millennium Way and Justice Road just after 11.30pm.

A 19-year-old man, who was a passenger in the car, died at the scene.

The driver and three other passengers were taken to hospital with non life threatening injuries.

As of Sunday morning, the provisional road deaths tally for Victoria stands at 215, up from 186 lives lost on the state’s road at this time last year.
