Trigger fish found on Bali beach

A Canadian tourist has left the internet shocked and horrified after sharing images of a nightmare-looking dead fish he found in Bali.

Sharing the pictures to the Facebook group Bali Best Things, the man revealed he came across the specimen on a beach in Uluwatu, Indonesia.

The images show a dead fish with various shades of brown and beige coloured scales, along with large teeth..

“What in the heck is this thing I saw on the beach in Uluwatu?” the Canadian man asked, seeking out the fish’s species.

More than people commented with the general agreement that the dead fish was a species called a trigger fish.

“Looks like a trigger fish – very territorial and have been known to nip at diver’s fins if you get too close to their nest,” one person commented.

“It’s a trigger fish, similar to a parrot fish but with bigger teeth and less pretty colouring,” another wrote.

Meanwhile, others shared some of their own encounters with the species.

“Trigger fish. I had one coming towards me when swimming at Padang Bai, I have never swam so fast. Those teeth,” one person wrote.

“Looks very much like a trigger fish. Distinguishing trait being their human-like teeth. I see them all the time diving in Indonesia,” a second added.

“They are super territorial during spawning season and can be quite confrontational when protecting their eggs.”

Trigger fish are often found in lagoons and reefs in most of the Indo-Pacific region, although they are absent from Hawaii.

They are known for their cranky temperament and have been seen charging and biting intruders near their nesting areas.

According to the Australian Museum, their name comes from the fact that they possess a dorsal fin spine that can be locked onto an erect position. They also have a shaft-like pelvic bone that can be lowered.

Using a combination of these two fins, the fish can make itself appear larger and discourage any potential predators.

Regardless of what the fish is, it didn’t take long for people to find the images humorous, with many making fun of the large teeth.

“It died because someone told it the price of dentistry in Australia,” one person joked.

“I think it uses Colgate toothpaste,” another wrote.

Another added: “That fish has got better teeth than me lol.”
