Mazda has cut two SUVs from its line-up in Australia.
The seven-seat CX-8 and small MX-30 SUVs are no more after Mazda Australia announced Australian-bound production would end later this year.
The move follows the axing of the large CX-9 SUV earlier this year to make way for Mazda’s new range of premium and much more expensive SUVs: the mid-size CX-60 and seven-seat CX-90.
Mazda only sold about 2200 MX-30s in the three years since it was launched in Australia.
It was sold as a mild hybrid and as a fully electric vehicle. Mild hybrid technology only brings minimal fuel savings compared to conventional hybrids and the electric MX-30 was hamstrung by a high purchase price and poor driving range.
Mazda had more success with the CX-8, selling almost 25,000 units in the five years it was on sale Down Under.
The CX-8 was pitched as a more compact seven seat and diesel-powered alternative to the petrol-only CX-9.
Mazda Australia marketing boss Alastair Doak says the introduction of the CX-8 was important as it gave customers increased choice.
“One of the CX-8’s many strong suits has always been its breadth of choice – from FWD and AWD powertrains and petrol or diesel options, even down to six or seven seats.”
Mazda’s new premium SUVs cover both bases ushering in big new six-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines with all-wheel drive as standard.
The CX-60 comes with a plug-in hybrid option and a petrol-electric CX-90 is expected to follow at a later date.
Mazda Australia boss Vinesh Bhindi says calling time on the two SUVs allows the company to focus on electrification of its model range.
“As we move into the next phase of the Mazda brand’s evolution – with electrification at the heart of our focus – we will ensure our valued customers continue to be well-furnished with a suite of exciting models to join us on this journey,” says Bhindi.
Mazda Australia plans to introduce a range of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles by 2025.
Both models are expected to be on sale in Australia until early next year.
