Aitkenvale, QLD: Elderly man using wheelchair killed in crash

An elderly man has been killed after being hit by a car while using his wheelchair.

It happened about 3.30pm Monday in Townsville in northern Queensland, about 1348km northwest of Brisbane, as the 85-year-old man travelled down Alfred St, Aitkenvale, in his motorised wheelchair.

Queensland Police said a Holden Monaro was travelling on the street at the same time when they collided.

The 85-year-old man was taken to Townsville University Hospital in a critical condition, where he died later that evening.

The man driving the Holden, a 28-year-old from Kelso, wasn’t hurt and is being interviewed by police.

At the time of writing, no charges had been laid.

“Officers are urging witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam or CCTV vision to contact police. Investigations are continuing,” a police spokesperson said.

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 131 444, or to make a report online via Policelink.

The man’s neighbour Norma Lee told the ABC she was home at the time and heard the crash involving the man she only knew as “Rudy.”

“I was reading and I heard the car coming. It was really making a lot of noise and then I heard a bang,” she said.

“When I looked out I could see Rudy there.”
