Gympie man in hospital after alleged Mary Street bashing


A man is in hospital in a critical condition after an alleged assault outside a bar in regional Queensland.

The brutal assault allegedly happened about 2am outside a licensed premise on Mary Street in the town of Gympie, located 176km north of Brisbane.

Emergency services rushed to the scene as members of the public applied first aid, the police said on Sunday morning.

The man suffered serious head injuries in the alleged assault and paramedics flew him to Sunshine Coast University Hospital, where he is now in a critical condition.

“Investigators were able to identify a suspect and subsequently attended an address on Horseshoe Bend, where they arrested a 24-year-old man who is now assisting with inquiries,” A Queensland Police spokesman said.

The police have established a crime scene at the premises.

The police are calling on members of the public who may have witnessed the assault, or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from Mary Street or Horsehoe Bend, to contact them.
