Sheppard Cycles: Safety recall for 38 bicycle models sold at Big W

A national product safety recall has been issued for 38 different models of bicycles sold by Sheppard Cycles Pty Ltd.

It includes various Avanti, Malvern Star, Raleigh, and Diamondback brand bicycles sold by Sheppard, over concerns someone riding them could crash.

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) recall arm, Product Safety Australia, the front wheels of the affected bikes may become loose and fall out if the quick release skewer is not installed and tightened correctly.

“There is a risk of accident and serious injury to the user if the front wheel comes loose or falls out while the bicycle is moving,” the recall notice reads.

The affected bikes were sold at both Big W department stores nationally, and at some independent bike stores.

Anyone who bought an affected bike at Big W can be sent a replacement quick release skewer directly, while anyone who bought from an independent store can have the skewer sent to that store.

Those who bought a bike subject to the recall should stop riding the bike and contact Sheppard Cycles Australia Pty Ltd via phone on 1300 883 305 to arrange for a replacement skewer.
