McDonald’s exposes Aussie eating habits, reveals ‘most ordered’ item at 4am

McDonald’s has exposed the eating habits of Australians, revealing a “late-night” order many of us are guilty of.

The fast-food giant has released data showcasing order trends via its MyMacca’s app over the last 12 months.

The 2023 MyMacca’s Replay has not only identified the food item Aussies order the most, but also highlighted how tastebuds vary from state-to-state.

Macca’s Hash Browns were crowned the most ordered item across the country while Fries, Hash Browns and Cheeseburgers were the top three “late night menu faves”, ordered between 11pm and 4am.

The Soft Serve Cone with Cadbury Flake ranked as the most popular late night dessert.

Meanwhile, the McCrispy was celebrated after McDonald’s Australia finally added it to the menu permanently in September, with over half a million customers enjoying the new burger since “earning its icon status”.

“This year, our fans have continued to show their love for the Golden Arches, celebrating life’s feel-good moments with MyMacca’s,” Elly Griffiths, head of consumer activations, at McDonald’s Australia, told news.com.au.

“It’s great to look back on the year with MyMacca’s and celebrate some of our customer’s favourite items, with the Hash Brown taking out top spot, McCrispy earning its icon status.”

The great debate around whether you prefer a Cheeseburger or Hamburger was also addressed in the annual roundup – a first for the burger giant.

Data shows we are a nation divided by cheese, with ACT, NSW, QLD and TAS all preferring a Macca’s Hamburger, whereas NT, SA, VIC, WA chose a Cheeseburger.

“While our core menu continues to offer great quality and great tasting products, we’ve enjoyed watching from the sidelines as Aussies continue to make Macca’s their own with unique hacks and flavour combinations,” Griffiths added.

“We look forward to what 2024 will bring with MyMacca’s, as we continue to make feel-good moments genuinely special, for everyone, everywhere across Australia.”

The hack hailed as the “best” of the year went to the infamous Hash Brown McFlurry Sandwich, created by Kelly Arvan, from Point Cook in Victoria.

The Aussie mum took TikTok by storm, with over 25,000 orders for Hash Browns and a McFlurry placed via MyMacca’s app between January and November.

If you missed it, the mum-of-one filmed herself tucking into her salty and sweet creation, describing it as “irresistible”.

People around the world were quick to put Mrs Arvan’s tastebuds to the test, rushing to their local McDonald’s restaurant to try the unorthodox food combination.

It was deemed a huge success, with many stating flavour combo was “insane”.
