Albo’s heartfelt New Year’s message

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has wished Australians a Happy New Year while praising the strengths of the country’s national character.

“I hope you’ve had the chance to celebrate with friends and loved ones,” the prime minister said in his annual New Year message, released on Monday.

Acknowledging that 2023 was unquestionably a challenging year for many Australians, Mr Albanese said the community had stepped up to the plate.

“Right around our country, Australians rose to meet those challenges – as they always do,” Mr Albanese added.

“We achieved a great deal as a nation – and we achieved it together. That is the Australian spirit.”

At the same time, Mr Albanese noted current global uncertainties which provided an opportunity to reflect on Australia’s strengths.

“We are a people of optimism, determination and, above all, fairness. We have the unique privilege of being home to the oldest continuous culture in the world.

“And our society has been enriched and enlarged by people of every faith, background and tradition.

“We have so much to cherish,” he added.

Mr Albanese said the nation’s strengths should guide the community in the year ahead, making “the greatest country on Earth even better”.

“All the very best to you and loved ones for a safe and happy year.”
