Community support for the family of 15-year-old shark attack victim Khai Cowley continues to swell, as a GoFundMe pledge reaches over 10 times the target.
About 1500 separate donations have been deposited to the page following Khai’s death at Ethel Beach in South Australia on December 28.
The initial target of $7500 was exceeded in less than a week, with more than $84,000 donated to help ease the cost of funeral services.
In the touching tribute attached to the page, Khai’s aunt Lauryn Barley called her nephew a “beloved” member of the family.
“Hi my name is Lauryn, Aunty to our beloved Khai, who was suddenly taken from us by a white pointer while surfing at Ethel Wreck off the coast of Yorke Peninsula,” Ms Barley wrote.
“I’m here to try help raise funds for my sister Kate and brother Tim to cover the cost of the funeral service.
“Any donations will be most appreciated.”
Khai’s body was recovered along the 450m long beach, about 300km from Adelaide.
SA Police reported he was likely mauled by the shark while out on his surfboard about 30 to 40m offshore.
The “unusual” incident now marks the third fatal shark attack in the past three months.
Locals from the community across the Yorke Peninsula have rallied in their hundreds to share a special message for Khai and his family, as well as offer thousands in donations.
A spokesperson for the Microgroms Surf Club, where Khai was a member, said the club had been left “devastated” by the young boy’s death.
“We are devastated by the passing of Khai, who was a member of our club since 2016,” they wrote on the GoFundMe page.
“He was a kind and considerate person, a good friend, and a talented surfer. Khai was well respected and admired by all who knew him. Love and support to his family.”
Khai’s friends, and friends of the family, shared their memories of the young “grommet” and pledged their love and best wishes the his family.
“Didn’t believe it when I heard the breaking news. No more buddy to race up the stairs at the train station at exactly 3:45 every day to get away from the crowd that gets off the train after school!” one post read.
Another read: “Our hearts are broken for you and your family Kate.”
“You’re constantly in our thoughts as is your beautiful Khai. Sending so much love and strength to you, Tim, Jett and the rest of the family.”
