Tributes are flowing for a beloved teenager killed in a horror road accident on a busy highway in Queensland’s regional southeast just days into the New Year.
Madison Jardine, 19, was driving on the Brisbane Valley Hwy about 5pm on Wednesday when she collided with a truck driving in the opposite direction.
The teen was died at the scene while the driver, a 36-year-old man, was flown to Brisbane’s Prince Alexandra Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
As news spread of her death, Toogoolawah State High School principal Ross Jardine posted a tribute for Ms Jardine on the school’s Facebook page.
“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I share the devastating news of the passing of Madison Jardine,” Ms Jardine said.
“Madison, who graduated Year 12 in 2021, was involved in a fatal traffic accident at Esk on the evening of January 3.
“Madison’s presence at Toogoolawah State High School left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
“Her gentle spirit, kindness and dedication made her a highly regarded member of our school community.”
Ms Jardine encouraged the school community to “cherish” and remember the late teen as they came to terms with the loss.
“To Madison’s siblings, who currently attend Toogoolawah State High School, we extend our deepest condolences,” she said.
“Our deepest condolences also extend to Madison’s parents and to their extended families and friends.
“I have reached out to Madison’s parents and assured them that our school community stands ready to offer support, comfort and assistance in any way we can.”
Locals and Toogoolawah State High School were quick to offer their own tributes to the “kind-hearted” teen.
“One of the saddest losses. Maddie was a kind hearted girl who looked out for others at school and made them feel included,” said Toogoolawah resident Charlie Lewis.
“I’m so glad my girls got to spend so many years dancing and laughing with you. Your kindness and laughter will leave a lasting impression … RIP Kiddo.”
Janet O’Connor, also from Toogoolawah, described Ms Jardine as “beautiful young woman” whose death was especially tragic at such a young age.
“To Madison’s family … my heart goes out to you … especially her Mum who I remember so well from her school days,” Ms O’Connor said.
Kate White, from Esk where the crash occurred, added that there were “no words right to tell anyone in this situation”.
“My heartfelt condolences to family and friends who had the pleasure of knowing what a beautiful soul Madison was,” she said.
“Absolutely heartbreaking … gone way too young but definitely never forgotten. Thinking of you all at this sad time.”
