Police have shot dead a man armed with a firearm after officers responded to a medical clinic on the NSW South Coast.

Police arrived at the scene, along Junction Street, in the town of Nowra just before 1pm after it was reported a patient at the centre had produced a weapon.

After nearly two hours, the man, who is yet to be formally identified, is believed to have walked out of the centre and confronted officers with the firearm.

Police shot the man, who was then immediately treated by paramedics who were unable to revive him.
