A “printing error” on a confusing parking sign has been blamed as the reason for multiple people being incorrectly fined.
Listener Jane called 2GB Radio on Wednesday morning after she was fined at Cabarita Park in Sydney’s inner west for parking in a spot marked “vehicles with trailer”.
She said she was challenging the fine with Canada Bay Council as the sign was unclear as to whether cars without a trailer could park outside the designated days. She said she also had photos of multiple other cars parking in the spots due to the confusion.
On Thursday morning, Jane called the radio station back to say the council confirmed it would revoke the fine. It also said it would review other fines issued since the signs were put in a few weeks ago.
“It’s in the process of being overturned,” she told 2GB’s Ben Fordham.
“I’ve been told not to pay it, they’ll get it sorted. They’ve told me they have covered up the signs. Progress is being made, not just for me but for everyone else.”
In a statement given to news.com.au, the council’s General Manager John Clark said he wished to “apologise” for the error.
“We recently acted on community feedback to create a small number of specific spaces for cars with trailers on weekends and public holidays,” he said.
“Unfortunately, the signs that were installed contained a printing error that was not picked up by our team on review. The error led to confusion and has resulted in some members of our community receiving fines.”
Mr Clark said he thanked Jane for “bringing her experience to our attention”.
“We are always looking to create a better customer experience for our community and in this instance, we let the resident down,” he said.
“The signs have been covered and new replacement signs are in production.”
