A man has drowned in the waters of a notorious beach near the NSW North Coast – the second death in the state’s waters in just 24 hours.
Emergency services were called to Tallow Beach, near Byron Bay, after 7am on Thursday when the man was found unconscious in the water.

The man, in his 20s, was unable to be revived.
Officers attached to Tweed/Byron Police District have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, a NSW Police spokesman said.
A report is being prepared for the coroner.
The man had been swimming at Cosy Corner, a surf spot at the beach notorious for its strong rips and sheltered surf breaks, Surf Lifesaving NSW duty officer Jimmy Keogh said.
He told the ABC the area was considered a “black spot” due to a number of drownings in the area over the years.
“It’s a very open beach; it does capture a large swell which does produce strong rips and large gutters,” he said.
“It is a very treacherous beach and we’re just asking people to take care.”
NSW Police have been contacted for further comment.
The tragic event follows a horrific drowning at Shelly Beach in Manly, NSW, less than a day earlier.
Authorities found the newlywed woman, 32, unresponsive in the waters of the popular Sydney beach about 1pm on Wednesday.
She was pulled to the shore by bystanders, who commenced CPR.
Despite their efforts and paramedics attempting to revive her for some 30 minutes, she died at the scene.
Officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command will prepare a report on behalf of the Coroner.
