Mary Ellis Beach, Port Lincoln SA: Man missing, 6 children rescued from rip


The search for a man missing after he became caught in a rip while swimming with six children near Port Lincoln continues.

Seven people got into trouble at Mary Ellis Beach near Sleaford just after 4pm on Friday and were unable to get back to the shore.

“Six people have since been helped from the water and are in the care of SA Ambulance. A man from the group is still missing,” SA Police said.

The missing man has since been identified as 43-year-old Dan Cojocea of Roxby Downs.

The search for a man missing in coastal waters at has resumed today.

Police confirmed Mr Cojocea was unable to get to shore and is currently missing.

A large-scale search for him resumed at 7am on Saturday, which included PolAir and a State Emergency Service vessel.

A SES drone was also being used to assist in the search.

It’s understood Mr Cojocea was on holiday with his family.

Meanwhile, four of the children were taken to hospital for treatment.

Mary Ellis Wreck Beach is small, surf beach 20 minutes south of Port Lincoln.

“Please note, this beach has a rip and there are no surf patrols in the area,” the Port Lincoln website warns.
