Taylor Swift: PM Anthony Albanese says Peter Dutton likes Nickelback

Anthony Albanese fired an extraordinary shot at Peter Dutton, accusing him of being a fan of one of the most hated bands on the planet, before gushing about his plans to catch one of Taylor Swift’s massive shows this week.

When asked about the star’s record-breaking Eras tour which kicked off in Melbourne over the weekend, Mr Albanese, who first claimed to be a Swiftie in 2022, confirmed his attendance one of her sold out shows during the last leg of her tour down under.

“I am going to Tay Tay,” the prime minister told Hit WA FM on Tuesday.

But when asked if he thought Opposition Leader Peter Dutton was also a fan of the global megastar, the Prime Minister joked that his political opponent more likely rocked out to controversial Canadian band Nickelback.

“Nickelback, I reckon,” he said.

“Or, the angry death metal stuff.”

Mr Albanese said he first got into the star’s music during her Folklore and Evermore era but said he was a particular fan of one of her most recent hits.

“I do spend a lot of time travelling – it’s just really calming,” Mr Albanese said.

“When I do DJ, particularly at schools, if you want to see a primary school go off – particularly young girls but young boys as well… Just ‘Shake It Off’.”

The prime minister also dished new details on his whirlwind engagement to long-term partner Jodie Haydon during a stint across local radio on Tuesday.

Mr Albanese first revealed he had popped the big question after posting a selfie with Ms Haydon following a romantic Italian dinner on Valentine’s Day last week.

But just over a week after the big news broke, Mr Albanese revealed he had planned the entire affair without anyone in his team knowing.

“We FaceTimed her mum and Dad that night and woke them up.. and then the next morning I told the team, then we put a post up and all hell broke loose,” he told Triple M Perth.

“I think one of the great achievements as prime minister that I’ve done is to manage to go off and get an engagement ring and do all of that without anyone knowing.”

Earlier on Mix 94.5, Mr Albanese said he had received an outpouring of suggestions as to where and when they big wedding should take place – but had no plans to “duck off” and get hitched without throwing a big party.

Referring to backlash he received for attend the nuptials of controversial radio shock jock Kyle Sandilands last year, the PM declared that he “loved weddings”.

“I’ve been bagged for going to weddings recently, but they are just a great celebration of love between two people in front of family and friends,” he said.
