CCTV footage shows alleged attempted robbery at Canberra bottle shop


CCTV footage has captured the moment a man allegedly attempted to rob a Canberra bottle shop before a brave bystander tried to fight him off.

Security footage released by ACT Policing shows a knife-wielding man, who police allege is Mitchell Jacka, entering Mitchell bottle-0 around 5pm on February 16.

In the video, the alleged attempted robber is seen holding a knife as he demands cash from an employee working at the register.

Police said the employee complied with Mr Jacka’s demands, with the alleged attempted robber seen scrambling to collect cash as well as a number of store items into a basket.

The employee is then seen escaping the shop, jumping over the counter, injuring herself in the process.

The video then shows the alleged attempted robber reaching over the counter to grab the till before cutting the attached cord.

With the till and basket in hand, he walks through the store before he is confronted by a group of bystanders.

One quick-thinking hero then uses a potato chip stand to joust Mr Jacka away before the pair engage in a tug of war.

Police said Mr Jacka “eventually dropped the items in his possession and fled the scene”.

He was charged with a string of offences including aggravated robbery (offensive weapon), assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon with intent.

He appearedat ACT Magistrates Court on Friday.
