The winning numbers for Thursday’s $40 million Powerball draw have been announced.

The numbers were 5, 15, 24, 27, 30, 32, and 35 and the Powerball was 2.

One lucky Aussie from Fairfield, Sydney, has pocketed the $40 million jackpot with three division two winners claiming $225,000.

The Sydneysider ignored initially ignored calls from The Lott and when he finally answered he thought it was a joke.

“How do I know this is for real?” the man said, according to The Lott.

After the penny finally dropped he said: “Thank you! That’s a big prize!”

The man said he would pay off his mortgage and added that he would also help out friends and family who were struggling amid the financial crisis.

This week’s jackpot grew to an impressive total after no one took home the $20 million jackpot last week.

The last time there was a $40 million jackpot is was taken home by 10 syndicate winners from Wentworth in NSW.

“We’re only a small town and it’s crazy to think there are now 10 multi-millionaires here,” one of the players told The Lott at the time.
