A 26-year-old stay-at-home mother was allegedly involved in a brawl at Adelaide’s Hindley Falafel House during a child-free night out with her partner.
Brooke Lee Haynes and her partner, who were having a night off from parenting their infant son, allegedly got into an intoxicated altercation.
Police were called to the scene following reports that a fight had broken out on Adelaide’s popular party strip.
The alleged conflict with police resulted in an officer sustaining a broken arm, though the charges against Haynes do not include this injury but rather focus on allegations of her spitting at officers.
Lawyer Peter Hill said Ms Haynes does not have a drinking or drug problem and is merely a hardworking mother who found herself in an unfortunate situation.
“They had a night off from their son … they have responsibly caught an Uber into town but parents who don’t get away much, the night’s got out of hand clearly due to intoxication,” he said.
“We say it’s not the case that this is a lady with a drinking problem or a drug problem, she’s simply a hardworking stay-at-home mother.”
Mr Hill said the officer’s broken arm is not the subject of any of the charges, adding that the assault charges relate to allegations of her spitting at police.
The incident occurred after police were called to a fight on Hindley Street just before 1am.
Both Haynes and a 26-year-old man from O’Halloran Hill were arrested, facing charges including hindering police and aggravated assault.
Haynes was initially refused police bail, while the man was granted bail and is scheduled to appear in court in May.
Magistrate Kate White granted Ms Haynes bail, citing her “very limited history”
She is set to reappear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court next month.
