Ferenc Stemler murder: CCTV linked to Sydney drug dealers Canterbury murder

Homicide squad detectives have released CCTV linked to the fatal shooting of a Sydney drug dealer.

Emergency services were called to Broughton Street in Canterbury about 2am on July 27, 2023 after reports of a shooting.

On arrival, officers found a man with gunshot wounds. He was treated by paramedics, however died at the scene.

He has since been identified as 28-year-old Ferenc “David” Stemler.

Mr Stemler was sentenced to almost eight years in jail over a plot to import more than $1 million worth of cocaine into Sydney in 2015.

The investigation was undertaken by Task Force Magnus under Strike Force Murrell, established to crack down on the city’s violent underworld.

Last month, a 27-year-old man was charged with Mr Stemler’s murder, while a pregnant 23-year-old woman was charged with assisting others involved in the plan to kill Mr Stemler.

Detectives have released new CCTV vision from the night of the alleged murder in the hopes it will encourage more witnesses to come forward with information.

A white Lexus – which was stolen in July last year – can be seen arriving at the Casula Central carpark about 10.25pm on July 18, with police alleging the car lay in wait for the planned shooting.

Two days later, footage shows a black hatchback and a dark-coloured hatchback “checking on” on the Lexus. Four days later, the car was checked again.

The Lexus’ lights are seen flashing as the keys appeared to be tested.

Just before 9.50pm on July 26, a white Commodore – believed to be stolen in April 2016 – enters the carpark from Pine Road, before leaving in convoy with the white Lexus.

Both cars travel to the carpark of a townhouse a short distance away on Pine Road, where they waited for approximately three hours.

At 1.04am on July 27, the cars were seen exiting the M5 Motorway at Bexley Road in Kingsgrove.

CCTV captures the moment Mr Stemler approaches the Commodore outside his address on Broughton Street in Canterbury before he was allegedly shot. Detectives believe the meeting was arranged.

After the fatal attack, the white Lexus and a dark hatchback are seen in convoy in Casula on their way to allegedly burn out the Lexus used in the shooting.

Detectives are appealing for anyone with information about the movements of the cars or shooting incident to contact police.
