Lake Macquarie plane crash: Two people on-board gyrocopter crashed in NSW

Two people have been rescued after a light plane crashed at Lake Macquarie on the NSW coast.

The gyrocopter plane – a small rotor copter– attempted to take off at Marmong Point when it overturned, almost 500 metres offshore, just before 10.30am on Wednesday.

Two people on board the submerged aircraft scrambled onto nearby boats.

They were both assessed by paramedics and found to be uninjured.

The aircraft has been towed to a local marina for further investigation.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews dispatched eight vehicles to the scene, including specialist rescue crews.

Hazardous material specialists have established booms around the aircraft to contain any fuel leak.

NSW Police have taken control of the incident and authorities will attempt to determine the cause of the crash.
