Two men were allegedly assaulted by a stranger in a violent and unprovoked attack at an airport terminal.
The alleged incident happened at Perth Airport about 6am on Thursday, with a man restrained by witnesses until police arrived.
Police said a 22-year-old man was sitting inside the domestic terminal when the 29-year-old alleged attacker walked past and slapped him twice in the back of the head.
A few minutes later, he allegedly returned to the same area and punched a 26-year-old man in the face, then grabbed him and pushed him into a wall.
Three men, including the 22-year-old who was allegedly hit earlier, stepped in to help the 26-year-old.
During an attempt to restrain the accused, the 22-year-old allegedly received a blow to his chin, resulting in a cut that needed stitches.
Australian Federal Police officers arrived a short time later and spoke with the accused, other travellers and witnesses.
The 22-year-old received first aid treatment at Perth Airport.
The second man who was allegedly assaulted did not require medical care.
During a search of the 29-year-old’s luggage, police allegedly found two vials of anabolic steroids.
The man, from the town of Manjimup in WA’s South West, was arrested, charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, common assault and possessing a prohibited drug (steroids).
He was refused police bail and was expected to face Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday.
AFP Perth Airport superintendent Peter Hatch said they would not tolerate violent behaviour at airports.
“The AFP works closely with the industry to ensure our airports are a safe environment for travellers and staff,” he said.
“The AFP has zero tolerance for anti-social, violent or dangerous behaviour and will prosecute anyone if they pose a threat to other people’s safety.”
