A woman has died and a four-month-old baby boy is fighting for life after a car smashed into a tree.
The pair had been travelling together in Upper Caboolture, north of Brisbane, about 2.30pm on Friday when their car crashed into a tree.
The woman, who police say was driving the vehicle, was declared dead at the scene, while the infant was taken to Queensland Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.
Tragic footage of the scene shows a white SUV on its side between two trees, badly crumpled by the impact of the crash.
Burpengary Forensic Crash Unit Sergeant Greg Price said the baby was not immediately found in the wreckage, having been ejected from his baby seat.
“We can confirm the child was in an approved baby seat however the impact from the crash has actually evicted the child from that capsule,” Sgt Price said.
“And the child was actually located within the vehicle upon emergency services arrival.”
His father is at the hospital as the infant continues to fight for life.
“At this stage, all I know from last night is he is stable in the pediatric ICU, he is critical and they are still assessing his injuries,” Sgt Price said.
“As far as we are aware they could not do surgery last night but that’s part of the assessment this morning.”
Police are investigating the circumstances of the shocking crash, and have appealed to anyone who may have seen the vehicle, witnessed the incident or have relevant dashcam footage to come forward.
“At this stage, the investigation indicates the vehicle was travelling eastbound on Caboolture River Rd near Tinney Rd and has left the road, colliding with several large trees,” he said.
“The vehicle suffered extensive damage as a result of the crash.”
Sgt Price said police would consider if speed was a factor in the crash, but that the investigation into the cause remained ongoing.
“We are seeking any witnesses to the crash or any dashcam from the crash,” he said.
“We are seeking what the actions of the driver were prior to the crash.
“Most of the people that called in yesterday have come across the crash, they weren’t witnesses.”
