NSW Police arrest man with knife outside politician’s office

Counter terrorism police have arrested a 19-year-old man allegedly in possession of knives and tactical equipment outside a politician’s office in a suspected terror threat.

The arrest took place on Wednesday afternoon after police received a concern-for-welfare report about the man, who was outside Labor MP Tim Crakanthorp’s office.

Sky News reports the teenager had allegedly written a large anti-semitic manifesto which had been distributed to multiple people about committing a mass-killing.

It is understood the teenager walked into Mr Crakanthorp’s officer briefly while he was wearing the ballistic vest and was in possession of multiple knives.

The teenager was allegedly wearing a helmet and tactical gear when he was arrested.

In a statement, NSW Police said officers attached to the Newcastle district attended a premises on Workshop Way where they arrested the man.

“Following a subsequent search police located a number of items which have now been seized,” the police said.

“The teenager was taken to Newcastle Police Station.

“Following further inquiries officers became aware of the existence of a document that had been circulated to a number of public figures and media outlets.

“The male is currently assisting police and there is no ongoing threat to the community relating to this investigation.

“Investigations continue by Newcastle Police District with specialist investigators attending to assist.”

Mr Crakanthorp issued a statement confirming the man had entered his office.

“I understand that there was an incident in Newcastle today,” Mr Crakanthorp said.

“I have spoken with police and they are managing the situation and have assured me that nobody was harmed.

“I have been advised that the individual briefly walked in and out of my office. He left before making any contact with my staff.”
