Massive influx of Huntsman spiders take over Australia

South eastern parts of Queensland could soon be overrun with huntsman spiders thanks to recent wet weather which is creating perfect conditions for the eight-legged arachnids.

A massive influx of huntsman spiders has been noticed in homes and gardens across the region.

While huntsman spiders aren’t considered dangerous, many people still have a fear of them when spotting them indoors.

Experts are warning there will be an explosion of huntsman in the coming weeks.

Ecological data scientist at the University of Sydney, Dr Eliza Middleton, told The Morning Show huntsman spiders love the recent weather conditions caused by la Nina.

She went onto explain the hot and wet weather in recent weeks has created the “perfect breeding conditions” for the creepy crawlers.

“They’re getting bigger; we’re coming into our third year of perfect conditions for spiders and pretty much any invertebrate,” Dr Middleton said.

“With all that rain and coming now into this warmer weather, we have a lot more food and extra food for them, so with that extra nutrition that they can get, they can get bigger.”

Huntsman are a regular sighting for many Queenslanders but many people still get a fright when seeing one.

Gabriella Pizzato, an influencer and model who recently moved to the Gold Coast, shared with her 18.6k TikTok followers in September her terrifying discovery while she was sitting on the toilet.

Using selfie mode, she videoed herself with her hand over her mouth in shock.

“I just went to the toilet, and I got up and flushed the toilet and there is a big f***ing spider under the seat,” she told her followers.

Owner of Northern Pest Services, Raneet Verma told The Courier Mail he’s seen an increase in the number of pest infestations in houses in recent weeks.

“Spiders, cockroaches and ants are a big problem at the moment; I’m seeing 50 per cent more of these infestations than what I have seen in previous years,” Mr Verma said.

“There are a lot of daddy long legs and huntsman inside houses at the moment, as well as American cockroaches infesting kitchens, especially dishwashers.”
