Bali Instagram vs reality exposed in traveller’s new video

A traveller’s video from the resort village of Canggu in Bali has racked up millions of views.

Titled “Insta vs. reality, Bali”, tourist Victoria Goulburne shared a look from a stunning resort in Canggu, which featured a pool and deckchairs, then panned the camera around to see the view … which was rather disappointing.

The footage begins with some upbeat song lyrics; “My life be like oh, ah” while showing the resort and then cuts to a man saying “oh ah, oh” as he shows the view from the accommodation along with hysterical laughter.

The resort’s deckchairs were pointing out towards a sight one would expect to hold breathtaking beauty – however, there was really just a lot of mud, sticks, grass and bushes visible due to the low water level of the adjacent mangrove.

On TikTok, where she posted the original video, Victoria wrote: “Don’t be fooled by Insta #instavsreality”. Meanwhile on Instagram, where she also later posted the video, she wrote: “All jokes, ily (i love you) really Bali. Seeing as though this just hit 20 million views on TikTok I thought I’d share the lols on Insta.”

Victoria also clarified that she didn’t stay at the accommodation.

The traveller, who is currently based in Saigon, Vietnam, never expected the reaction she would get to her video.

Some were quick to point out that the Bali resort is simply the site of mangroves, while others said to come back at another time to see better views.

One commented: “You didn’t know mangrove forests look like when the water (is at) low tide?”

Another agreed: “But it’s clean tho (sic). It’s just low tide.”

While a third commented: “Hahaha come back again when it’s not raining season.”

However, others agreed with her video.

“That’s what I was talking about. Bali is only beautiful in photos,” one posted.

While another noted: “Them deck chairs are facing the wrong way.”

And a third said: “Living in Florida I can smell this video.”
