A 75-year-old woman has died while out for some last-minute Christmas food shopping in north-east Melbourne.
Marie Mander was walking across Upper Heidelberg Road in Ivanhoe at about 8am on Christmas Eve when she was struck by a car.
Emergency services were unable to revive her.
She had been carrying food for Christmas at the time, according to the Herald Sun.
Ms Mander’s grieving family is devastated.
“We are all deeply in shock at the loss of our dearly loved Marie,” the family said in a statement.
“Not having her here has left a big hole in our family especially just before Christmas.”
Victoria Police have charged the driver of the car with dangerous driving causing death.
The 36-year-old man from the Melbourne suburb of Fairfield was bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on December 28.
Tragically, there was also another death on Victorian roads on Christmas Eve.
A motorbike rider died at Phillip Island.
Police believe the motorcycle was travelling along Phillip Island Road in Cowes just after 9pm when it ran into a car, but the exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined.
Officers performed CPR on the man but he died at the scene of the crash.
In NSW, a two-year-old boy died after he was hit by a 4WD on a property in Sydney’s northwest on Christmas Eve.
Paramedics rushed to the property in Dural but the child was unable to be revived.
It was the second Christmas Eve fatality for the state after a man died in St Marys in western Sydney.
The man, believed to be in his 70s, suffered critical head injuries after being hit by a ute on Monfarville Street.
He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.
The same day, two people died in two separate crashes in Queensland.
A 19-year-old man died after his ute left the Leichardt Highway and hit a tree about 30km north of Banana in Central Queensland at about 8.45am.
A passing motorist stopped to render first aid but the 19-year-old from Blackwater died at the scene.
In the afternoon, a 28-year-old man from Gin Gin died after a crash at Drinan near Bundaberg.
Police believe the man was driving on the Bruce Highway when his car collided with a truck travelling in the opposite direction at about 4:30pm.
The truck driver suffered minor injuries.
