Boat crash: Two teen girls killed while riding inflatable behind boat

Two teenage girls have died following a horrifying boat crash at a caravan park in northeast NSW.

The two girls, aged 13 and 14, were being towed behind a boat on an inflatable craft when they crashed into a tree stump, police will allege.

Emergency services were called to a caravan park at Ski Gardens Road in Rushes Creek, about 60km northwest of Tamworth, at about 5pm on Tuesday.

Members of the public had performed CPR on the two girls until paramedics arrived.

However, they died at the scene.

The driver of the boat – a 72-year-old man – was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene was established and was examined by specialist forensic police.

The boat and other items relevant to the investigation were seized.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has commenced, with assistance from the Marine Area Command.

Reports will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
