Sydney named as 10th ‘most Instagrammable’ city in the world

An Australian city has been ranked the 10th ‘most Instagrammable’ place in the world – if you guessed Sydney, you would be spot on.

The popular Aussie destination famed for its picturesque beaches made its top 10 appearance on Big 7 Travel’s 50 most Instagrammable places in the world for 2023.

It narrowly beat the paradise for Instagrammers, the Maldives (16th), one of the most trending cities to visit this year – Tokyo, Japan (14th) and the party town of Ibiza, Spain (19th).

The list was compiled by the travel team based on a destination’s ‘abundance of opportunities for capturing stunning photographs and videos sure to impress followers and inspire adventure’.

Milan was crowned the best followed by London, Paris, Istanbul, New York, Nepal, Chicago and Bali.

Milan – a global capital of fashion and design – has a total of 97 billion hashtags on TikTok, and just over 22 million on Instagram.

“The city offers iconic landmarks and fashionable neighbourhoods for the perfect photo backdrop – no matter your niche,” Big 7 Travel wrote.

Some were shocked it beat the likes of the Amalfi Coast which ranked 7th last year and 42nd this year – and also Venice, which didn’t make the Top 50 at all.

“Milan beat Venice? Really?” one person wrote online.

“Florence is far more beautiful,” wrote another.

Meanwhile, Sydney collected a total of 15,135,638,423 hashtags on Instagram and TikTok.

Sydneysiders were chuffed to hear it ranked 10th in the world, while others had a dig at the cost of living.

“And so it should, Sydney is the most beautiful city in the world,” one person wrote on Facebook.

“Sydney is beautiful. But cannot beat Maldives,” wrote another.

One person joked: “Too bad no one can afford to live there, but that’s fine if you can Instagram it that’s all that matters.”

A fourth said: “But still Melbourne is amazing,” while another agreed: “As a Sydneysider I think Melbourne is Australia’s best city – it would be hands down if it wasn’t for the weather in winter.”

One person was shocked by the overall list. “Surely this is a joke right? Sydney, Chicago, New York, London and Paris … somehow beating beautiful places like Vanuatu, Hawaii, Scotland and Iceland.”

Sydney has the largest population of any city in Australia with 6.33 million. It is also home to stunning beaches, including Bondi and Manly Beach, as well as an array of beautiful gardens, hiking trails and coastal walks.

In terms of the most snapped Aussie suburb – that went to Surry Hills after it took out a new digital accolade as Australia’s most Instagrammed neighbourhood.

In 2022, Sydney ranked 13th on the list and 8th the previous year.

Singapore took the crown in 2022.
