Anzac Park playground: Little girl cut face on slide at new playground, Somerset, TAS

A mother has shared a gruesome picture of the injury her four-year-old daughter suffered after she went down a slide at a newly-built playground.

Megan Bellette said her daughter was playing on a metal slide at the newly constructed Anzac Park all-abilities playground west of Devonport in Tasmania when the accident happened.

The little girl ran back to her mother with a “very nasty” deep cut on her face that was bright red with blood.

Ms Bellette said some generous strangers helped her stem the bleeding before she rushed her daughter to the emergency room where she received three stitches.

It is not known exactly how her four-year-old cut herself but after inspecting the slide the next day, Ms Bellette claimed the metal slide had not been “soldered off smoothly”, leaving a sharp exposed edge.

Worried other children might get hurt at the playground that only opened earlier this month.

“My four-year-old daughter unfortunately had an awful accident yesterday afternoon at the new Somerset playground,” she wrote on a community facebook page.

She explained that the slide appeared to have a very sharp underside and urged parents to watch their kids while playing at the park.

“Please take care with your kiddies, I will be letting the council know tomorrow so they can fix ASAP,” she said.

Horrified locals took to the comments to share their shock and concern that a children’s playground could have resulted in such an injury.

“This is terrible! I hope your little one is OK and mends,” one commenter said.

“OMG seeing that gave me shivers, that could have been so much worse,” a second wrote.

Others claimed they had noticed other dangerous spots in the park while some were unimpressed by the $1.3m project which has taken four years to complete.

“There’s lots of dangerous spots on that playground, unfortunately,” they said.

“Must say for the cost of the park it’s not that crash hot, and it’s open to the public but not even finished yet?” another added.

NCA NewsWire has contacted the Waratah Wynyard Council for comment.
