Beloved Aussie TV and radio personality Wendy Harmer has recalled the time she interviewed British pop star Robbie Williams while he was intoxicated.
During an appearance on The Project on Wednesday night, the veteran host recounted the time she was working at 2Day FM and was assigned to do a phone interview with Williams.
Only problem was, he was drunk when picked up the call.
“He was completely off his face. He was like, ‘Wendddyyy! Helloooo!’” she told the Project panel.
Harmer said that Williams’ relaxed attitude towards the interview was down to the pair having a close relationship over the years. Harmer had interviewed Willilams before and they had such good banter that he showed her his “grey flannel underpants, it was that kind of interview”.
“We got on so well,” she recalled. “He said he was going to be coming back to Australia and he said there was only one person that he would do an interview with and that was me.”
“So I got his phone number and I had to do a phoner to his flat in London, and it was probably very late at night there.
“[The interview] was completely unusable, the whole thing. But I still adored him.”
In the following days, Harmer said she received a surprise from Williams when he sent her a big bouquet of flowers with a card attached in which he apologised.
“I still have it pinned on my pinboard behind my desk: ‘Wendy, I’m really sorry, Robbie Williams.’” she shared.
While Williams remains a firm favourite, Harmer has revealed she is not a fan of Meatloaf.
Appearing on The Matty Johns Podcast in April, she was asked to name the “biggest a**ehole” celebrity she’d ever come across and she said it was the late singer.
“Oh my god, what an obnoxious person he was,” she told host Matthew Johns.
“He came in to co-host the show one day on 2DayFM. He just treated me like trash, talked over the top of me, didn’t look at me … I just found him incredibly rude. I was very unimpressed with Meatloaf.”
